Introduction

Power cables form the backbone of every modern electrical network, carrying energy from generation and substations to the industrial plants, commercial buildings, and residential districts that depend on it. Evenson Power manufactures a comprehensive range of low voltage and medium voltage power cables designed to perform reliably under demanding electrical, thermal, and mechanical conditions. Each cable is built to deliver stable current-carrying capacity, low losses, and decades of trouble-free operation.

As power demands grow and grids become more complex, the quality of the cable connecting each node of the system becomes increasingly critical. Evenson Power power cables are engineered to meet that challenge, offering consistent insulation quality, tightly controlled conductor resistance, and robust protective layers that resist the stresses of installation and the environment over their full design life.

What Is a Power Cable

A power cable is an assembly of one or more electrical conductors, individually insulated and usually bound together within a protective sheath, used to transmit electrical power. Unlike signal or control cables, a power cable is designed primarily to carry substantial current at a defined voltage grade while limiting losses and maintaining safe insulation integrity.

Evenson Power power cables are available in single-core and multi-core configurations, with or without armor, and across a wide spread of voltage grades. This flexibility allows a single trusted source to supply cable for underground feeders, building risers, machine connections, switchgear interconnections, and distribution networks alike.

  • Single-core and multi-core constructions
  • Unarmored and armored (SWA / STA) variants
  • Low voltage and medium voltage ranges
  • Copper or aluminum conductor options

Construction

The performance of a power cable is defined by the quality of its layers. Evenson Power builds each cable from the conductor outward, with every layer engineered to a specific function. The conductor provides the current path, the insulation withstands the operating voltage, and the sheath and any armor protect the cable mechanically and environmentally.

Conductors are produced from high-purity copper (Class 1 solid or Class 2 stranded) or aluminum, compacted to optimize diameter and reduce voids. Over the conductor, an extruded XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) insulation is applied with precise wall thickness control. For medium voltage designs, semi-conducting screens over the conductor and insulation, plus a metallic screen, manage the electrical field. An inner bedding, optional steel wire or steel tape armor, and a tough PVC or HDPE outer sheath complete the assembly.

  • Conductor: high-conductivity copper or aluminum, compacted stranded
  • Insulation: XLPE (90°C) or PVC (70°C)
  • Conductor & insulation screens (MV): extruded semi-conducting layers
  • Metallic screen: copper tape or copper wire screen (MV)
  • Armor: galvanized steel wire (SWA) or steel tape (STA)
  • Outer sheath: PVC or HDPE, UV and abrasion resistant

Voltage Grade and Sizes

Evenson Power power cables span the practical range required by utilities and industry. Low voltage cables are rated at 0.6/1 kV and serve the bulk of building, plant, and distribution wiring. Medium voltage cables are offered at standard grades from 3.6/6 kV up to 26/35 kV for primary distribution and substation feeders.

Conductor cross-sectional areas range from small control-feeder sizes through large feeder sections, covering both metric and AWG/kcmil sizing. This breadth lets engineers standardize on Evenson Power across an entire project, from final-circuit wiring to main incoming feeders.

  • Low voltage: 0.6/1 kV
  • Medium voltage: 3.6/6 kV, 6/10 kV, 8.7/15 kV, 12/20 kV, 18/30 kV, up to 26/35 kV
  • Sizes: 1.5 mm² to 1000 mm² (approx. 16 AWG to 2000 kcmil)
  • Cores: 1, 2, 3, 3.5, 4 and 5 core

Key Features and Benefits

Every Evenson Power power cable is designed to balance electrical efficiency with installed durability. XLPE-insulated designs offer a 90°C continuous conductor rating and excellent short-circuit performance, while PVC designs provide cost-effective 70°C operation for general wiring. Compacted conductors reduce overall diameter and improve handling, and tightly toleranced insulation walls keep losses and partial discharge low.

  • High current-carrying capacity with low dielectric loss
  • Excellent thermal and short-circuit withstand (XLPE)
  • Moisture, chemical, and UV resistant sheathing
  • Flame-retardant and optional low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) versions
  • Long service life of 30+ years under rated conditions
  • Reduced installation cost through optimized weight and bend radius

Applications

Evenson Power power cables are specified wherever reliable energy delivery matters. In utility networks they form underground and overhead-to-ground distribution feeders. In industry they connect transformers, motors, drives, and switchgear. In commercial and infrastructure projects they serve risers, sub-mains, and final distribution boards.

  • Utility primary and secondary distribution
  • Industrial plants, factories, and process facilities
  • Power stations, substations, and switchyards
  • Commercial buildings, data centers, and hospitals
  • Renewable energy: solar farms and wind installations
  • Direct burial, ducts, trays, and conduit runs

Standards and Testing

Evenson Power power cables are manufactured and tested to internationally recognized standards, ensuring interchangeability and confidence in performance. Routine, sample, and type tests cover conductor resistance, insulation thickness, high-voltage withstand, partial discharge, and mechanical properties.

Compliance is maintained against IEC, BS, ASTM, ICEA, and UL frameworks as applicable to the cable type and market, with full traceability from raw material to finished reel.

  • IEC 60502-1 (LV) and IEC 60502-2 (MV)
  • IEC 60228 conductor classes
  • BS 5467 / BS 6622 armored and MV cables
  • ICEA S-94-649 / S-97-682 (US distribution)
  • UL 1072 (MV) and ASTM conductor specifications
  • Routine, sample, and type testing on every design

Installation and Handling

Correct installation protects both the cable and the people working with it. Evenson Power cables are supplied on sturdy reels with sealed ends to keep out moisture, and each drum is marked for length and type. Observing the minimum bending radius, pulling tension limits, and temperature guidance during installation preserves the integrity of the insulation and screens.

For underground runs, proper bedding and backfill prevent point loading, while cable cleats and supports manage thermal expansion in trays and risers. Termination and jointing should follow the appropriate kit instructions and voltage grade.

  • Respect minimum bending radius (typically 8–15 x cable diameter)
  • Avoid pulling below recommended temperature
  • Use correct glands, terminations, and joints for the voltage grade
  • Support and cleat to manage thermal movement
  • Keep ends sealed until termination
