Introduction

Aerial Bundle Cable, widely known as ABC, modernizes overhead distribution by replacing separated bare conductors with insulated cores twisted into a compact bundle. Evenson Power manufactures low and medium voltage ABC engineered for the reliability, safety, and economy that today’s distribution networks require.

Because the conductors are insulated and bundled, ABC dramatically reduces the risk of short circuits from tree contact, wind-driven clashing, and animal bridging. The result is a network that is safer to the public, cheaper to maintain, and more resistant to power theft.

What Is Aerial Bundle Cable

ABC is an overhead cable in which two, three, or four insulated phase conductors are stranded helically around a central or peripheral neutral conductor that doubles as the mechanical messenger. The neutral may be a bare or insulated all-aluminum-alloy conductor sized to support the mechanical load of the bundle, so the cable supports its own weight across the span without a separate catenary wire.

Evenson Power ABC is supplied in self-supporting configurations for both street lighting and distribution, with conductor sizes and core counts to suit service drops, mains, and three-phase feeders. Because the conductors are individually insulated and held tightly together, the phases cannot clash in the wind and accidental contact does not cause a fault, fundamentally changing the safety and reliability profile compared with traditional open-wire overhead lines.

  • Insulated phase conductors twisted as a bundle
  • Bare or insulated neutral / messenger conductor
  • Self-supporting, no separate catenary required (most LV designs)
  • Duplex, triplex, quadruplex and multi-core formats

Construction

Evenson Power ABC conductors are stranded from electrical-grade aluminum, with the load-bearing neutral messenger produced from high-strength 6201 aluminum alloy where it carries the mechanical tension of the span. Phase conductors are insulated with weather-resistant, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE/XLPE-UV) formulated to resist ultraviolet light, heat, and abrasion over decades of outdoor exposure.

The insulated cores are laid up helically around the neutral to form a compact, stable bundle that distributes mechanical load and keeps the conductors together under wind and ice. Black, carbon-loaded insulation provides excellent UV stability for long outdoor life.

  • Phase conductors: stranded aluminum (1350-H19)
  • Neutral/messenger: 6201 aluminum alloy (AAAC) for strength
  • Insulation: black UV-stabilized XLPE
  • Lay-up: helically stranded self-supporting bundle
  • Optional insulated neutral and street-lighting cores

Voltage Grade and Sizes

Evenson Power ABC is produced for low voltage service at 0.6/1 kV and for medium voltage covered overhead applications up to about 33 kV. Phase conductor sizes range from compact service-drop sections to substantial feeder sizes.

Configurations cover duplex and triplex service drops, quadruplex mains with neutral, and multi-core assemblies that include street-lighting conductors, letting one product family serve the whole low-voltage overhead network.

  • Low voltage: 0.6/1 kV
  • Medium voltage covered: up to 11/20/33 kV (MV-ABC / covered)
  • Phase sizes: 16 mm² to 150 mm² (and larger)
  • Configurations: duplex, triplex, quadruplex, multi-core

Key Features and Benefits

The insulated, bundled design of ABC delivers tangible operational advantages over traditional bare overhead lines. Faults from conductor clashing and vegetation contact are largely eliminated, public safety is improved, and illegal connections become far more difficult. Installation is faster because narrower right-of-way and simpler hardware are required, and ongoing maintenance costs fall sharply because the line is far less sensitive to trees and weather.

For utilities, the cumulative effect is a measurable reduction in outage frequency and duration, fewer storm-related repairs, and lower vegetation-management spending over the life of the network. For the public, insulated conductors mean a dramatically safer overhead system in built-up areas. These benefits make ABC the preferred choice for new low-voltage distribution and for upgrading aging bare-wire networks.

  • Greatly reduced short-circuit and tree-contact faults
  • Improved public and worker safety (insulated cores)
  • Reduced power theft and illegal tapping
  • Lower right-of-way and tree-trimming costs
  • Faster, simpler installation with lighter hardware
  • Compact bundle withstands wind and ice loading

Applications

Evenson Power ABC is ideal for overhead distribution in urban, suburban, rural, and coastal areas where reliability and safety are priorities. It is widely used for service drops to homes and businesses, low-voltage street mains, and combined power-and-lighting circuits, as well as covered medium-voltage lines through wooded corridors.

  • Urban and suburban low-voltage distribution
  • Service drops to residential and commercial premises
  • Rural and remote electrification
  • Coastal and high-corrosion environments
  • Forested or vegetated corridors (reduced trimming)
  • Combined street-lighting and distribution circuits

Standards and Testing

Evenson Power ABC is manufactured and tested to recognized international standards for self-supporting bundled overhead cable, covering conductor properties, insulation thickness, weather and UV resistance, and mechanical strength of the messenger.

Verification includes insulation resistance, high-voltage withstand, tensile testing of the bearer, and accelerated weathering to confirm long outdoor life.

  • IEC 60502-1 insulated power cable (LV)
  • BS 7870-5 (LV ABC) and relevant MV-ABC standards
  • IEC 61089 / ASTM aluminum conductor specifications
  • NFC 33-209 / HD 626 type references where applicable
  • Insulation, HV withstand, tensile, and UV/weathering tests

Installation and Handling

ABC is installed using suspension and dead-end assemblies clamped to the neutral messenger, which carries the mechanical load. Evenson Power ABC is supplied on reels ready for stringing, and its self-supporting design allows rapid installation with fewer poles and simpler hardware than bare lines.

Insulation-piercing connectors allow tap-offs without cutting the main run, and correct tensioning of the messenger ensures proper sag. The insulated cores tolerate contact with structures and vegetation far better than bare conductors.

  • Support and tension from the neutral messenger
  • Use suspension and dead-end clamps rated for the bundle
  • Insulation-piercing connectors for live tap-offs
  • Set messenger sag per the stringing chart
  • Reduced clearance and trimming requirements

Quality Assurance & Testing

Evenson Power aerial bundled cable is manufactured under continuous process control, with XLPE insulation extruded and cured to ensure uniform wall thickness, full cross-linking, and consistent dielectric strength along the entire length. Conductor stranding, diameter, and resistance are monitored in line, and the insulation is checked for concentricity and integrity using high-voltage spark testing during production.

Finished cable is sample-tested for conductor resistance, insulation thickness, tensile strength and elongation, hot-set behaviour of the cross-linked insulation, and high-voltage withstand. The carbon-black formulation of the insulation is verified for ultraviolet resistance, ensuring the cable retains its mechanical and electrical properties through prolonged outdoor exposure to sunlight and weather.

Each drum is supplied with a routine test report and is clearly marked with cable type, size, length, and production batch for full traceability from factory to field.

  • In-line spark testing of extruded XLPE insulation
  • Conductor resistance and stranding verification
  • Tensile, elongation, and hot-set type testing
  • UV-resistance verification of insulation compound
  • Batch-marked drums with routine test report

Installation & Service Life

Evenson Power ABC is engineered for fast, safe overhead installation along poles and building facades. The self-supporting messenger or insulated bundle carries the mechanical tension, reducing the number of insulators and hardware compared with bare-conductor lines, and the twisted assembly keeps phases insulated and spaced to virtually eliminate phase-to-phase faults from wind, vegetation, and animal contact.

Because the conductors are individually insulated, the system tolerates tree contact and accidental touch far better than open wires, dramatically reducing outages, illegal tapping, and the maintenance burden of right-of-way clearing. Standard suspension, tension, and anchoring clamps make the bundle quick to dead-end and tension, and connections are made with insulation-piercing connectors that require no stripping of the main line.

The UV-stabilized XLPE and weather-resistant construction give the cable a long outdoor service life with minimal degradation, lowering the total cost of ownership of the distribution network.
